ON SALE THIS WEEK IN REVIEWS

Alabaster: Wolves #4

"The art has been gorgeous since the first issue, and it continues to add depth to Kiernan’s story. Steve Lieber took his pen into overdrive for the first panels of this issue. The monster is so damn cool, and wickedly detailed." - Bloody Disgusting

"Alabaster: Wolves is such a fine horror comic that gets everything right, from story to art to just the right amount of acidic wit. There’s a potential for a letdown as everything must be resolved by next month, but I have confidence that Kiernan, Lieber, and Rosenberg can pull it off, based on the excellence we’ve seen so far." - Newsarama

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Devil’s Engine #3

"It’s a nice wrap up to the arc, and it will only leave readers wanting more “Hell on Earth”. As always the art is fantastic and the story escalates the “Hell on Earth” story line further as the forces of darkness continue to strive for mayhem and destruction." - Bloody Disgusting

"Crook is one of the best; his work was excellent from top to bottom. For my money, he is the best “monster” guy on the B.P.R.D. staff , only maybe behind James Harren . He just gets how to draw a giant monster, and the ever spectacular Dave Stewart colors a bloody beast like no other." - Multiversity

Baltimore: Dr. Leskovar’s Remedy #2

"Dr. Leskovar's Remedy #2 is filled with a ton of action with creatures and situations never before seen in Baltimore.  This all-out monster and monster hunter melee is well constructed with plenty of situation changes and interspersed dialogue to keep the fight engaging for the entire issue." - Fanboy Comics

"Once again this comic book does everything right.  The story moves.  The characters are mysterious yet appealing.  Stenbeck’s artwork gives this book a great early 20th century feel while also supplying frightening monsters like those seen in Eerie or Creepy." - Comic Bastards

Concrete: Three Uneasy Pieces

"Prior to reading this book I had no notion of who Concrete was, but I thought the idea of a man abducted by aliens who then put his brain in a body made of rock struck me as intriguing. Concrete isn't a new character though, so for a neophyte like me there needs to be a way to get me initiated without having to go back to the start with issue number one. Thankfully, Paul Chadwick offers a one-shot issue called Concrete: Three Uneasy Pieces." - iSmellSheep

"Paul Chadwick’s Concrete, which he writes and draws, is definitely social commentary. He’s not anti-government or anti-police, if anything he’s pro-law enforcement. All three stories put Concrete in situations where he either calls the police or stumbles into assisting them. The social commentary seems to creep in here and there in reference to violence. One story in particular (Everything Looks Like A Nail) deals with the use of Tasers." - WhatChaReading

Dark Horse Presents #14

"On sale now is Dark Horse Presents #14, the new issue of Dark Horse's prestigious anthology series that showcases emerging talent alongside some of the greatest writers, artists and cartoonists comics has to ever. The book won an Eisner Award at last week's San Diego Comic-Con for Best Anthology, which makes it all the more special that the new issue of DHP is oversized, coming in at 104 pages." - Comics Alliance

"To get 104 pages of story for $8 in today’s monthly comic book market is excellent value for money and amongst the variety of stories contained within Dark Horse Presents #14 there’s probably something for everyone; it’s also an excellent showcase for the talent currently working at Dark Horse and I’d be very surprised if Tony Puryear in particular didn’t go on to have great success in the industry." - Comic Bastards

Fatima: The Blood Spinners #2

"The second issue of this mini-series carries over all the cool aspects of the previous issue. It is humorous, sexy, and full of peril. It's, also, the strangest and best written zombie story of late. Though, there is a choppiness to the story, it exudes the best aspect of social commentary found in the masterpieces of horror. An excellent, excellent story." - Technorati

"I’m really excited to see a time and place in the next issue, as well as more of Fatima’s character development, as we only saw a glimpse in the first couple of issues. I’m actually surprised at how exciting this comic has been so far, and I’m psyched to see what the next issue of this unconventional series brings." - Bloody Disgusting

Reset #4

"Peter Bagge’s artwork is as expressive and animated as ever, with his trademark bendy-limbed characters, and use of highly emotive, almost caricature-esque, facial expressions. Reset #4 is a strong character-driven story that makes a fine addition to Bagge’s impressive catalogue." - Newsarama

"Just like Bagge’s seminal series Hate, Reset doesn’t tie up in the end with a clear ending. Instead, Bagge leaves it open, knowing that he’ll probably never revisit these characters (after all, Guy Krause isn’t Buddy Bradley).  Just like real life, nothing is so cut and dry and the real world doesn’t always leave you with a happy ending. Although things work out decently for Guy in the end it’s still bittersweet. Actually, most of the characters get something decent but it isn’t the idealized version of their desires; instead they settle. After all, isn’t that the way life always works out?" - Florida Geek Scene

Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison #3

"If you're like so many other "Star Wars" fans who want to see Darth Vader unleashed, if even just a bit, then "Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison" #3 is worth the price of admission. Not only does it wonderfully revisit established Star Wars canon, but also deftly merges the Expanded Universe while delivering a solid story with amazing art. The Force is definitely with this book." - Comic Book Resources

"To my fanboy delight, it’s every bit as good as they made it out to be. What strikes me the most is how I’m pulling for Imperial recruit Tohm, hoping the Emperor survives the virus, and wishing all the rebels were dead. Hats off to writer Haden Blackman for converting me to the dark side." - IGN

July 11th, 2012

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #11

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9" #11 is definitely one of the better issues of the series, and it makes me feel like the comic is back on track. With a great cliffhanger to lead into next month as well, I'm definitely excited to see what happens next. This is the sort of writing I like to see about my favorite slayer." - Comic Book Resources

"This issue was solid. The ending alludes to an exciting big bad that could really potentially cause some big trouble. As per usual the art and writing were great." - BAMFAS

Conan the Barbarian #6

"Conan the Barbarian #6 comes pretty damn close to being perfect. There are certain scenes, certain panels, certain bits of dialog that give you everything you could want from a Conan comic. There are times when Wood just nails Conan, getting right to the core of the character, and times when Harren and Stewart combine to give us the Hyborian Age in all its gritty wonder." - Comics Bulletin

"Everything you need to know about this comic book can be found on the cover. The sumptuous, crazy-hot sexy cover with the look between Conan and Bêlit. The passion melts the page, burning with a intensity that scorches your heart." - Technorati

Creepy Comics #9

"Creepy issue #9 is a thrilling addition to any horror related comic collection. Whether you’re a long established fan or a new reader, Creepy issue #9 will twist your perception then leave you begging for more." - Comics Detectives

"With three good and one excellent story, this is a horror anthology that doesn’t fail.  In fact, just one of these short stories outdoes most of the single story books filling the shelves." - Comic Bastards

Eerie Comics #1

"For those who have never really tried the more old-fashioned, pre-CCA style horror comics, this is as good a time as any to give them a whirl. For longtime fans of this book and its older sister, “Creepy,” though, “Eerie” #1 is a no-brainer." - Multiversity

"Four stories in all, three in Black and White and one in color. All very well done and even though I could predict the storyline or outcome, I am looking forward to the second issue of this book. I might get a suprise in the storyline." - iFanboy

The Massive #2

"If you aren't reading "The Massive" yet, I wholeheartedly recommend it. With titles like "MIND MGMT" and "The Massive," Dark Horse has lined up some great new ongoing series. "The Massive" doesn't just introduce you to a dangerous future, it drops you in feet-first and lets you try and swim for safety. Definitely check this series out." - Comic Book Resources

"The Massive #2 continues Brian Wood’s slow-play revelation of an unparalleled global catastrophe. The flashbacks are jarring, but helpful in illustrating the required background information. Don’t expect any quick answers; Wood is in no hurry to show his cards." - Geeks of Doom

Star Wars: Knight Errant—Escape #2

"John Jackson Miller is well established in the universe and I have a feeling that when we get further along in the series things will defiantly heat up." - Word of the Nerd

"The story moves along quite nicely, and it’s certainly one of the better-written Star Wars comics. I’m looking forward to seeing how this develops. Having seen some of the covers for later issues, I have an idea, and I think it’s going to be very cool indeed." - Civilian Reader

The Strain #6

"David is doing some marvelous things with his interpretation of the novel, not that I’ve read them yet. I say that because I am thoroughly enjoying what I am reading. It cannot be easy to pick what is important to the story and needs to be on the page and what helps to make it that much more effective, scary, and creepy and an all around stand out from the crowd read. He’s really made this a must have each and every month." - Comic Book Nerds Are Hot

"It's taking several topical horror concepts and mashing them together. Vampires. Biological horrors.  It's more weird than anything." - Technorati
