Happy Birthday Emily!

09/23/2010 10:55am

As an ardent fan of fall leaves and full moons, I’m really excited about this week. Today is the first day of fall AND the first full moon of September, and those two things also make this the perfect birthday eve for one of my favorite freaky friends, young Emily the Strange.  Today, September 23, is Emily’s thirteenth birthday, so I decided to call up her best friend and legal guardian, Rob Reger, to see what kind of fun he’s planning with Emily to celebrate. When I called, Emily was hanging out with Rob at his house in Berkeley, so we piled up on the speakerphone for a pre-birthday catch-up. Here’s what went down:

Shawna: Hey, dudes! What’s going on?

Rob: We’re celebrating Emily’s 13th birthday. Again.

Emily: Déjà vu!

Rob: How do you do it, Em? How do you get to stay thirteen while the rest of us keep aging?

Emily: I guess I don’t want to grow up. I mean, I like being myself, as I am today. I can always keep learning and improving my skills, but why not be young while I can?

Rob: Why not, indeed. Tell us how you do it, though.

Emily: What? You want me to give you my recipe for eternal youth potion so you can publish it on the Dark Horse blog? No way, Reger. I mean, I like you and all, but it’s MY birthday. You’re supposed to give me something, not the other way around.

Rob: I just thought you wouldn’t mind—

Emily: And you thought wrong. What are you gonna ask for next — my time machine blueprints?  You’re way out of line.

Shawna: Rob, why don’t you show Emily what you made her for her birthday?

Emily: Yeah, Rob.

Rob: Here (noises in the background). I made this painting for you, Emily. It’s another visual chapter in the Encyclopedia of Hallucinations, viewable in four directions from all eleven dimensions.

Emily:  Boss! That’s more like it! I should be able to find some cool new direction for my thirteenth year in that!

Rob: Yeah, there are answers in it, for sure. But I still don’t know how you perpetually stay the same age . . .

Emily: Okay, oh nosy one — here’s a hint: bongos.

Rob: Awesome! I’ve got some in the basement. Wanna go jam?

Emily: Dude! Let’s go! I get the Easy Listening machine!

Rob: It’s all yours. I just fixed the fax machine player piano and I’ve been dying to try it out.

Shawna: Before you go, tell me what else you two are planning for Emily’s birthday.

Shawna: . . . Hello? Dudes?

Emily: (sound of bongos and piano fading into the night)

There you have it, my comics-loving friends — another thirteenth birthday in the life of Emily the Strange. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some work to do. And if you want to do some more reading about what sorts of craziness Emily tends to get into on her birthday, check out issue #4 of Emily the Strange: The 13th Hour. It’s out on — you guessed it — October 13!

Love,

Shawna Gore,

Dark Horse Comics Editor
