Drawing on your Nightmares!
This fall, Dark Horse has tons of material from the people who’ve defined our horror line—Powell, Mignola, Niles, del Toro, Corben—and new titles from some of the most notable names in horror comics (Tim Seeley!) and films (Lance Henriksen!). In October alone, we have a Lovecraftian issue of Creepy, a new B.P.R.D. title featuring young Hellboy, the return of Powell’s crass version of Billy the Kid, and a visceral new book from the creator of Hack/Slash. Meanwhile, the great Richard Corben, recent inductee of the Will Eisner Hall of Fame, has monthly Poe adaptations in DHP, leading to his adaptation of Poe’s “The Conqueror Worm” in December. So far only Mignola has seen the pages; he tells me it’s “much stranger than either of us could have imagined.” I can’t wait . . .
The best horror stories, whether literary or lowbrow, are created through well-wrought characters, unique visuals and fresh concepts, and tense plotting—and comics is a perfect art form for those things. Dark Horse tends to lean away from the real lurid stuff, although a lot of people have had to look away from Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra’s Colder #1 cover. Gore has its place in horror; in films, it’s often only as effective as it is convincing—but you know things on the comics page aren’t real, so we think it’s the ideas and the characters that make horror work in a comic. And no medium has ever been more effective at creating and maintaining larger than life characters like Hellboy and the Goon. There are some things other media do better than comics, just as comics do some things better than other media—but what makes horror tick also makes comics tick. This fall, our horror books are gonna get under your skin. Prepare for some unique experiences.
