Dark Horse in the Headlines 09/27/2010

Publicity Coordinator Jim Gibbons here. Let's skip the small talk and get straight to the good stuff…

Emily the Strange
Initially popping up on Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog before making waves on about every other comics and movie blog the internet has to offer, Chloe Moretz (best known as Hit-Girl from "Kick-Ass" and her upcoming turn as Abby in "Let Me In") has been cast as Rob Reger's "counterculture icon" Emily the Strange. There's no screenwriter or director attached at this time, but the ball is definitely rolling on Emily's big screen debut! Stay tuned to "DH in the Headlines" for more info, as it arises!

The LA Times' Hero Complex also ran an excellent piece on Ms. Moretz. Go read that one, as well!

The Amazing Screw-On Head
It's always a pleasure to see a great book getting the accolades it deserves. Mike Mignola's The Amazing Screw-On Head and Other Curious Objects hasn't been wanting for tremendous reviews since the hardcover came out in early September (In fact, here's one from iFanboy!), and getting ranked as number two on the New York Times' "Hardcover Graphic Books" list is just another tip of the hat to a fantastic piece of fiction.

In other Mignola-related linkage, ComicBookResources.com's Comics Should Be Good blog had some brilliant things to say about the game-changing Hellboy: The Storm #3:
"Fegredo's art continues to rock, serving as a surprisingly excellent substitute for Mignola's own work, especially with the watercolory coloring style provided by Comics' Best Colorist (TM), Dave Stewart. As always, the Hellboy and B.P.R.D. titles offer a consistent high quality at ever stage of production, unmatched in the vast majority of mainstream ongoings. I can understand waiting on the trades for these, given how well the Mignola-verse crew handles breaking up the stories and getting the trades out on time, but that reliable bite of good comics every issue is too tempting for me to pass up."

And, to cap it off, here's an incredible Hellboy cake that was posted on the Cake Wrecks blog a few weeks back. Who knew Big Red could be so sweet?

Terminator: 1984
After it's big USA Today feature two weeks back, Zack Whedon and Andy MacDonald's Terminator: 1984 got the interview treatment over at Newsarama and Wired.com's Underwire blog ran a nice extended preview of the book.

The Guild
Since it was announced that Felicia Day's "The Guild" would continue in comic form after its first, successful miniseries, not much info has leaked out about the series of one-shots focusing on every other member of The Guild. Last week, both covers to the first new Guild issue made the rounds. With one cover by the über-talented Darick Robertson and another by indie comics legend Gilbert Hernandez, The Guild: Vork will be co-written by Day and Jeff Lewis (the actor who plays Vork) and available for purchase in December. But it gets even better! If two new Guild covers weren't enough, USA Today's Pop Candy premiered the first cover to the second, new Guild issue: The Guild: Tink. The inimitable Peter Bagge is the artist responsible for this beauty and you can go go check out all the new Guild artwork at Pop Candy right now!

Gerard Way
You know that little music project that Umbrella Academy creator Gerard Way has on the side? Yeah, you know the one. Well, Way's My Chemical Romance premiered the first look at their upcoming album "The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys." Besides being super radtacular, the video also featured a performance by comics luminary Grant Morrison! Pixu artist Becky Cloonan paid tribute to Morrison's appearance with this excellent piece of art. Pretty awesome, no?!

Al Williamson
Over at ComicBookResources.com, Alex Dueben put together an amazing memorial piece for the late, great Al Williamson. From Creepy and Eerie to Flash Gordon, all of us here at Dark Horse are proud to be publishing archival editions of some of Williamson's tremendous work and I highly recommend giving this excellent piece of comics journalism a read.

Empowered
David Brothers published an interesting examination and thoughtful review of Empowered Volume 6 over at Comics Alliance. Very well done and well worth reading. Go check it out!

Previews
Check out these sneak peeks at Baltimore: Plague Ships #3, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 #37 and Billy the Kid's Old Timey Oddities and the Ghastly Fiend of London #2. Not enough free comic clips for ya? How about looks at Hellboy: Masks and Monsters, Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom #3 and Turok, Son of Stone #1!

Interviews
Here's a few links to add to your weekly dose of Qs and As. Stan Sakai chatted with ComicBookResources.com about Usagi Yojimbo, Chris Avellone discussed Fallout: New Vegas—All Roads (also) with CBR and Jon Schnepp spoke with Newsarama about Metalocalypse/Dethklok. Great pieces all around.

Ladies, gentlemen, children of all ages, that's all I got for you this week! Hopefully you enjoyed this round of "Dark Horse in The Headlines," please check back next week (Same Horse time, same Horse channel!) for more news, interviews and reviews about all things Dark Horse!
