THIS WEEK IN REVIEWS

NOVEMBER 21, 2012

B.P.R.D.: 1948 #2

"There is really nothing wrong with this series. Even if you consider me to be bias towards Mignola’s work, this issue is just too damn good to turn away from. I say this all the time, and I’ve probably said it more than I can count, if you’re not reading this series, you. Are. Missing. OUT! Period. So go and buy it. Right now." - Read Comic Books

"Arcudi and Mignola’s script jump off the page. Like most B.P.R.D. miniseries, 1948 is just a good read. There are no “shocking revelations” or publicity stunts like other comics. It’s just solid fantasy storytelling meant to appeal to people who want actual substance to go along with their books." - Complex

Baltimore: The Play (one-shot)

"Baltimore: The Play is a great one-shot story and gives you some insight into Haigus and his inner-workings. The story itself mirrors a short story from the master of the macabre himself, Edgar Allan Poe. The references and coincidences between Baltimore and The Masque of the Red Death are uncanny. You would never think these two stories and characters have anything in common, but having it thrown in your face you sit back and wonder how you never saw the comparisons. A great story with a fantastic crew putting it together." - Geeks of Doom

"Just when I think Baltimore can't get much better, Mignola and Golden prove me wrong. Awesome." - Comics Bulletin

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Spike #4

"For all Buffy loyalists who wondered if Victor Gischler’s script made any sense, well, this script knows where it’s headed and makes a lot of sense. Whatever happens next, Morgan has earned her place as a Buffy character." - Comics Grinder

"With only one more issue ready for release next month, Victor Gischler delivers a fast-paced fourth installment that finally tells the readers where Spike: A Dark Place is headed; not only in terms of plot development leading towards the finale, but also regarding Spike’s character growth and place in the grand narrative of “Season 9″." - Bloody Disgusting

Dark Horse Presents #18

"Dark Horse Presents brings so many different creators freedom to explore boundaries with their storytelling. That freedom always results in strong comic books. Yet another strong anthology." - Comic Book Bin

"This year's winner of the Eisner award for Best Anthology, Dark Horse Presents has been one of ComicsAlliance's favorite titles since it was relaunched in 2011 to continue the classic and influential series' tradition of showcasing emerging talent alongside some of the greatest writers, artists and cartoonists mainstream and underground comics has to offer." - Comics Alliance

Edgar Allan Poe’s The Conqueror Worm (one-shot)

"With a strong sense of tragic irony and an exaggerated flair for the dramatic, Richard Corben delivers a truly terrifying interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Conqueror Worm.” By staying true to the source material, Corben brings a sense off surrealism to Poe’s work. Admirers of Poe cannot deny how Corben’s artistic style provides a memorable picture of the literary genius like no other." - Bloody Disgusting

"I had fun reading this comic, but there were also the gruesome parts that made me cringe. Corben is good at his shock value, but doesn’t do it in an obtuse or unnecessary way. I liked how Dark Horse and Corben included his notes and some sketches along with Poe’s poem itself to aid in the read. Without them this comic would have been a “What the $%@# was that?” comic, but with their reference everyone can understand and enjoy it." - Read Comic Books

The Goon #43

"Okay, so you are tired of me raving about this book every month, but you try to find a flaw in it.  Add this to your subscription box to realize how ripped off you are every time you read a poorly plotted G.I. Joe book or an abysmally written Ghostbusters." - Comic Bastards

"The art, as always, is simply gorgeous. Powell’s style brings a certain circus sideshow element to each panel, which fits this strange world like a glove. There is personality oozing from every page and the meticulous care is seen in every new character and location. After all these years, The Goon still manages to be a title for the true comic lover that doesn’t mind a bit of the surreal and peculiar in their reading." - Complex

Number 13 #0

"This Thirteen is Lucky.  I give Number 13 #0 four stars—it has me hooked. It’s not going to be a happy story, but I will be eagerly anticipating the future issues to learn more about these characters and their world. Buy it." - Major Spoilers

"Written by David Walker (Darius Logan: Super Justice Force) with artist Robert Love (Alpha Girl), Number 13 is a brew of intriguingly oddball ideas. Walker and Love seem to be aiming for a sci-fi yarn that effectively tugs on the reader’s curiosities. For that exact reason, issue #0 doesn’t completely satisfy but does make you demand to see what additional horrors these characters are on collision a course with. That, along with Walker’s ambitious world-building and Love’s amusingly bizarre-o character designs, gives Number 13 numerous possibilities." - Comic Book Bin

Star Wars: Agent of the Empire—Hard Targets #2

"I really like where this issue is going. This comic reads like a Bond film mixed with the Star Wars universe, which is a truly amazing thing. For readers of Star Wars that long for something that doesn’t revolve around Jedi or Sith, this is certainly a comic to be checking out!" - Read Comic Books

"All in all, John Ostrander continues to weave a fun story filled with action, fun, and some tantalizes bits of story and character development. The artwork is colorful and splendid with some truly gorgeous aliens rivaling the classic Mos Eisley Cantina bunch. With good pacing and a nice variety of content, the issue scores in the entertainment factor." - Roqoo Depot

NOVEMBER 28, 2012

Angel & Faith #16

"The twist at the end will surprise even the most jaded reader. It is a most satisfying twist and, just like the wry remarks between Angel and Faith at the start, bodes very well for us readers." Comics Grinder

"It's a very heavy subject but there is perfectly timed humor to keep it from becoming depressing. And there is a rather sudden surprise to the ending that possibly shake the whole series up. Interior artwork is excellent. Covers are fantastic. " - Technorati

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #101: The Return of the Master part 4

"It really had an old school feel to it, which sounds like it wouldn’t jive with a new book like BPRD, but it couldn’t have been more appropriate to do it than right now. With one issue to go, it will be interesting to see how things can get any crazier than they are now." - Comic Attack

"The numbering is still taking some time to get used to but this is, actually, issue 101 within the context of all the prior issues. Much like the earlier issues, it's filled with internal conflict distracting from the real problem which is the seeming return of the greatest enemy in this universe. Art is excellent and covers are very cool." - Technorati

Ghost #2

"One of the most interesting and best 1990s hero revivals (outside of the excellent new Valiant Comics books) Ghost is a must read." - Comic Book Bin

R.I.P.D.: City of the Damned #1

"It’s a solid first issue which delves into the origins of how Roy comes to work for R.I.P.D.; it’s a great starting point for new readers who are interested in the Film. Parker’s renderings add to the script, and bring Barlow’s vision alive with his superb visual storytelling. Even though it feels like the background story is compressed into insufficient space, the premise is still refreshing, and I’m looking forward to the next installment." - Bloody Disgusting

"Most prequels/tie-ins for films aren’t any good, but thankfully, this isn’t one of them. The build-up for theR.I.P.D. film is well underway, and this adaptation of the Peter M. Lenkov original does a great job thus far of giving fans some information on the characters and history, all while telling an engaging story. The artwork is along the lines of many Dark Horse titles, though Tony Parker adds his own unique style into the title. The series is getting off to a great start, and hopefully the next three issues of the mini will get things really rolling for the upcoming film and will continue to give fans a bit of nostalgia for long time fans and will hopefully gain several more with this offering." - EGM Now

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi—The Prisoner of Bogan #1

"There was a lot of setup in this issue, but I really enjoyed getting some back story to the characters.  There was little action, but there looks to be plenty of it coming up.  The question really is who all will be involved in the fighting and what side they will take in it." - VG Revolution

"After months of waiting, it was well worth it! With that being said, we give this issue 5 out of 5." - Roqoo Depot
