Star Wars Guest Blog #2

Star Wars #1 by Brian Wood is coming in January and we asked fans to share their excitement with all of you. This week we have Dustin Cox chatting about his love of the series that includes a wicked tattoo.

I suppose it can be assumed I am a big Star Wars fan. Above my desk is a poster for the Special Edition ’97 rerelease of Empire Strikes Back. The keyboard I am typing on plugs into an R2-D2 USB hub. My left arm is tattooed from elbow to wrist with an Imperial probe droid, and visitors often comment on the absurd amount of Darth Vader merchandise throughout my apartment. And if these visitors don’t mention ol’ Vader, chances are they will pick up a comic I bought last Wednesday. I just recently got back into comics, and the timing couldn’t be any better, it would seem. When I first came upon the news that Dark Horse would be putting out a new Star Wars comic based on the original trilogy, I dropped everything I was doing and began my relentless hunt for any information I could find.

Ever since I was first introduced to Star Wars, I have had a relentless desire to learn more about what was going on in the universe besides what we saw onscreen. I wished so badly as a child that I could somehow be thrown into the TV and be with Han Solo and Chewbacca on a dangerous smuggling run, or travel on a mission with Luke while he was still learning what it is to be a Jedi. Watching the original trilogy for the first time was such an amazing experience that I wish I could live it again. Not knowing what would happen next, wondering why Darth Vader had such an odd obsession with Luke—it made the reveal so much more impactful when those now-iconic words were spoken: “I am your father.”

I now have a chance to live this excitement again with the new, upcoming Star Wars comic published by Dark Horse, with writer Brian Wood, artist Carlos D’Anda, and the absolutely stunning cover art of Alex Ross. As readers we will be thrown back to the times of uncertainty, and our favorite characters don’t know that they end up saving the day. Wood has been quoted as saying, “Pretend like it’s 1977 and no other films were ever made or books ever written,” and honestly, that excites me to no end. Being able to follow these characters again as they discover themselves and the galaxy they live in is the best holiday gift anyone could ask for.

As I write this, I happened to look down and see a hardcover collection of the original trilogy printed by none other than Dark Horse. I bought this for five dollars when attending the last Tampa Bay Comic Con from a nice lady tucked in the corner of the many booths. My day at that con was the start of my refreshed interest in comics, and I have found myself overwhelmed with the amount of fantastic work coming out every week. It can be safely assumed I will be adding Star Wars to my subscription; I just wish it would come out sooner!
