ON SALE THIS WEEK IN REVIEWS

Angel & Faith #17

"Gage takes a highly obscure (and in my opinion, lame) element from one episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer – so obscure and lame that even the hardcore fan might struggle to recognise it on first glance, so get Google at the ready – and transforms it into an unforgettable one." - Bleeding Cool

"Angel & Faith has been consistently strong since the launch last year.  If you loved the Angel TV show, do yourself a favor and catch up on the series." - Comic Book Therapy

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #102: The Return of the Master part 5 (of 5)

"One phrase describes this issue. Holy Hell. The world is crumbling and society has taken a dump. Two enemies were emerging but it's not clear if they're both standing. The B.P.R.D. is imploding, almost as fast as the rest of the world, however one major hero who had been MIA for a while seems to have returned. And now everyone is waiting Hellboy to come back. Great interior art. Crazy, disturbing cover." - Technorati

"Definitely pick this up. It’s intense. And of course, pick up the other issues. My only complaint would be that nothing is really tied up, but I’m sure they’ll keep going. This arc of Hell on Earth has been one doozy of a ride." - Adventures in Poor Taste

B.P.R.D.: 1948 #3

"All in all, this B.P.R.D mini-series just keeps getting better. If you like monsters, even if you haven’t read B.P.R.D or Hellboy before, I suggest you check this series out. There’s something for everybody to enjoy. Out of the three series set in the late 1940′s, this one is shaping up to be the best one yet." - Read Comic Books

"Fiumara is absolutely owning this book. I was going to point out the Rieu body language in particular as well; it is tricky to pull off having one character look two totally different ways in a single issue while still keeping structural consistency with the character, and that is exactly what Fiumara does here. His art is realistic, with just a hint of funhouse mirror, which I absolutely adore." - Multiversity

The Black Beetle: Night Shift #0

"If there's one comic book that we’re most excited for in 2013, it’s Francesco Francavilla’s The Black Beetle. So far, it looks to be a throwback to the serials and film noir of the late ‘30s and early ‘40s. And now Dark Horse Comics has provided a taste of what to expect with this prologue issue." - Complex

"The Black Beetle: Night Shift #0 is all set up and all AWESOME! Let’s be honest, there’s plenty of pulp heroes running around these days, but The Black Beetle is all sorts of fun. No downbeat, depressing, down on humanity story here, just some fantastic action and adventure!" - Geeks of Doom

"Murder! Intrigue! Nazi werewolves! Is there anything else you really need in a book? Considering that everyone from Jim Steranko to Matt Wagner to Warren Ellis is raving about the book, we suggest you hightail it down to your local comic book shop and snag a copy before the trail goes cold." - Nerdist

Dark Horse Presents #19

"This year's winner of the Eisner award for Best Anthology, Dark Horse Presents has been one of ComicsAlliance's favorite titles since it was relaunched in 2011 to continue the classic and influential series' tradition of showcasing emerging talent alongside some of the greatest writers, artists and cartoonists mainstream and underground comics has to offer." - Comics Alliance

"Dark Horse Presents is the publisher’s recently re-launched anthology that highlights new comics, stories that don’t need an ongoing or even a limited series to be enjoyed, and it also provides opportunities for readers to “taste” current ongoing without spending too much on a book they are not sure of, and it is awesome!" - The Outhouse

Empowered Special #3: Hell Bent or Heaven Sent

"The thing I love about Empowered is that it comes along when there’s a story to tell. It’s never forced into coming back for more, but it finds a way to find the right time. This was a great one shot that was full of humor and actually some classic super hero battles that you really can’t see any more in today’s modern comics. What’s even better is that this is one one-shot that you don’t need to know anything about before picking up and you’ll be happy that you did just that." - Comic Bastards

Michael Avon Oeming’s The Victories #5

"Seeing the end of The Victories is a little bittersweet, but fear not! It's clear that Oeming has more stories in mind to tell as the fifth and final issue ended in a way that leaves the door open for more Faustus and Jackal. The Victories #5 is a satisfying conclusion to the miniseries and is definitely worth checking out." - Omnicomic

Number 13 #1

"It makes a solid debut and has definitely captured my attention. I’ll be checking out the next issue for sure as more of the mystery around the story unwraps and a conflict looms in the horizon. If you’re fearing the end of the world this week then you should buy this issue for a glimpse of what we all might go through or just buy it because it’s really good and entertaining." - Comic Bastards

"Number 13 officially has me intrigued. Robert Love has written and penciled a unique new story and I’m liking it! Our interest has been piqued about what happened to Thirteen and why he seems to be the only one with amnesia. " - Den of Geek

R.I.P.D.: City of the Damned #2

"With only two issues left in Dark Horse Comics’ R.I.P.D.: City of the Damned, Jeremy Barlow continues to approach the narrative with an accelerated pace that’s fueled by Tony Parker’s knack for visual storytelling. Feeding off of each other’s creative vision, this duo effectively dishes out a well-balanced issue that’s ripe with mystery, humor, and eccentric elements of horror." - Bloody Disgusting

"While this direction isn’t always entirely clear, it’s definitely a fun trip thus far. Roy is an interesting character that is sure to translate well into film, and the rest of the cast, while not all that developed, still do a solid job of complimenting him. Tony Parker does a great job on artwork once again, creating a rugged, painted style that is both true to the Dark Horse style and all his own at once." - Digital Noob / EGM Now

Rotten Apple (one-shot)

"This issue collects the story serialized in Dark Horse Presents. It's a fairly straight-forward story about a mercenary trying to recover an artifact. What is kind of cool is the opposition she encounters in all of its Universal Monsters design." - Technorati

Star Wars: Agent of the Empire—Hard Targets #3

"Hard Targets #3 comes in with some serious action. Whether it’s Agent Jahan Cross’ rescue of Count Dooku, or a prison break involving a freelance intelligence operative, the pace is ramped up. With good artwork and a fun story, this issue keeps the arc interesting while setting things up for the next one." - Roqoo Depot

"If Disney had any sense at all, the next series of Star Wars films they make would be about Jahan Cross. He's fantastic. As charming and dangerous as James Bond. Easily the most interesting person in the Star Wars universe. The conflict in the story is much blander than prior issues but the overall tone is full of sexiness." - Technorati

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi—The Prisoner of Bogan #2

"The real strength is in the dialogue – not only do we get what is driving the story along, we get some great expressions that could be more the slang of the day – “dock your ego”, “time to burn sky” – good stuff – I really enjoy getting a flavor of the timeframe – good job to Jon Ostrander and Jan Duursema." - Big Shiny Robot

"All that being said, this is a really good issue.  The story has a few missteps, but Ostrander and Duursema have constructed an exciting action tale with philosophical moments about the force and the Je’daii’s understanding of and dealing with the dark side." - EU Cantina
