THE WEEK IN REVIEW

OCTOBER 02, 2013

Catalyst Comix #4

"There's a decent level of variety for three stories with similar themes. Definitely worth picking up if you see it." - Unleash the Fanboy

"Artists Dan McDaid (Doctor Who), Ulises Farinas (Gamma), and Paul Maybury (Aqua Leung) continue to do an excellent job on their respective stories. I was particularly excited to see Maybury get more pages to draw Amazing Grace because his style is so fun and fluid." - Adventures in Poor Taste

Grindhouse: Doors Open at Midnight #1

"A must read for fans of 1970s grindhouse, Tarantino films, and well written and drawn comic books for mature readers, Grindhouse Doors Open at Midnight is not to be missed." - Comic Book Bin

"There is a certain magic to Grindhouse: Doors Open at Midnight that you cant find anywhere else. Its important to support a book like this, because nothing quite like it exists, and as it goes on, itll allow a wide range of stories to be told that are nothing but fun. Check out Bee Vixens From Mars you wont be disappointed." - Bloody Disgusting

The Occultist #1

"If you want a story that takes advantage of the mixed elements of a superhero and horror story this is for you. Give it a try and you won't regret it." - Analog Addiction

"Overall, this is a great start to new part in the chapter of The Occultist. Seely continues to be a stand up writer in the comic community and with the art of Mike Norton, The Occultist, and promises to be an exciting and fresh story that everyone should take a look at." - Unleash the Fanboy

The Star Wars #2

"The Star Wars #2 is a must own that comes from such high caliber stock that it deserves to be on everyone's pull-list. Highly recommended." - Unleash the Fanboy

"The Star Wars #2 isn't a perfect issue and while it may become bogged down with some boring political speak, the climax more than makes up for it." - Comics the Gathering

OCTOBER 09, 2013

Abe Sapien #6

"The art is spectacular, Sebastian Fiumara and Dave Stewart brighten up and detail Abe's world like we haven't seen in the B.P.R.D. Universe before." - Following the Nerd

"Even though Abe Sapien #6 feels like a bridge issue, it's a rich one, with plenty of good story and some beautiful art." - Unleash the Fanboy

Creepy Comics #14

"It's a uniformly fine crafted book with the Dark Horse polish I've come to have a significant admiration for. Talent showcase books can be a mixed bag but this is an example of doing it right." - Comic Bastards

"Creepy Comics #14 is proof that you can balance fun and artistic accomplishment without detriment to either, that to make the most of any genre, you need both. Editor Brendan Wright understands that in order for three consecutive scary tales to register upon the reader, there has to be contrast, relief!" - Comics Bulletin

Elfquest Special: The Final Quest (one-shot)

"Elfquest" is a unique beast, a fantasy adventure with little adventure, espousing a hippie-commune ethos that's equal parts laughable and enviable, made somehow better by its flaws, refusing to change over nearly forty years of publication. Wendy and Richard Pini clearly care deeply about their characters, and that attachment shows through in every page. Caring this much about something isn't cool, and it'll turn many readers away. But for those who stay, who earnestly give in, the reward is to find personal satisfaction in a comic that spends sixty awkward pages jumping from elf to elf in a cast of hundreds, catching up with every secondary and tertiary character like a half-forgotten friend at a really great party." - Comic Book Resources

Halo: Initiation #3

"In the end Halo Initiation #3 turned out to be an action movie with very little depth, but it was a good one at that. Recommended." - Unleash the Fanboy

"The Halo Initiation miniseries is a nice introduction into the Halo universe outside of the Master Chief and the Covenant. The three issue series has some surprisingly well-design interiors worthy of the Halo franchise." - Major Spoilers

Resident Alien: The Suicide Blonde #2

"This is one of the best ongoing mini-series in comics right now. I'm very much looking forward to the ending in the next issue, but I know I'm going to be bummed out when I'm forced to wait for the next installment." - Comic Bastards

"The writing in this issue was exactly right for the book. Peter Hogan did a great job of giving us a good sense of what his characters were really like, more so than in the past two issues." - Adventures in Poor Taste

Shaolin Cowboy #1

"The Shaolin Cowboy is incredibly odd, incredibly dense, incredibly thrilling in a way that gives me a small little high every time I read an issue of this series. Yeah, this comic's back after way too long and for those of us who remember it, yay! an amazing comic is back. But for those of you who never read Shaolin Cowboy "well, goddamn, you're a lucky motherf**ker, you know that? Because you'll feel this rush completely fresh." - Comics Bulletin

"It's the little things that make this book great, so if you're a sucker for the finer things (get it?), then this is the book for you. Who needs dialogue with so much to look at?" - Newsarama

Star Wars #10

"Brian Wood has synced the tension between his many different plot lines and here he kicks them all up a notch at the same time." - IGN

"Brian Wood develops characters and brings great drama to this issue. Carlos D'Anda continues to excel at creating emotion from imagery." - Comic Book Therapy

X #6

"Looking for a crime comic with a lot of grit, some interesting plot developments and a kickass hero? This is it. Seriously." - Adventures in Poor Taste

""X" #6 just gets better and better, and it's a pleasure to have this book on a monthly basis. If you're in the mood for a dark crime series, "X" marks the spot. All in all, their best effort yet." - Comic Book Resources

OCTOBER 16, 2013

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #112

"B.P.R.D." #112 brilliantly moves the chess pieces around the board in beautiful ways, and is the domino that really is going to set this world moving forward." - Multiversity

"This is a real good, real fun and (in most ways) real pretty book and a damn fine comic. Read it." - Comic Bastards

Baltimore: The Infernal Train #2

"Baltimore continues to be one of the most consistently great comics out there. This issue’s new revelation and twist wasn’t my favorite from this series, but I’ve learned to trust Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden as storytellers." - Comics Bulletin

"The story has continued to develop in an intriguing direction, while most of this installment was surprisingly action-packed and quick-paced. Mignola and company seem to hit all the right notes with this one, and it will be interesting to see how they wrap up the current arc next month." - All Comic

Bloodhound: Crowbar Medicine #1

""Bloodhound: Crowbar Medicine" #1 was a wonderfully pleasant surprise. This book is smart and clever, and it's going to make you eager to read more. If you're like me, well, you've got a "Bloodhound" collected edition to tide you over until then. If you've never read "Bloodhound" before, then "Bloodhound: Crowbar Medicine" #1 is a fantastic starting point. You won't regret it." - Comic Book Resources

"Bloodhound: Crowbar Medicine has the potential to be one of the best mini-series of the year, so be sure to check it out." - Geeks Unleashed

Brain Boy #2

"Those looking for an alternative to the mainstream dark superheroics should come here for an interesting take on superheroes and the like. Silva and Lente are producing some of the best material that readers could ask for." - Comics The Gathering

"Brain Boy is a wonderful new series with a lot of story under its belt considering only two issues have been released so far. However, there is a lot to be interested in here. This book has action, mystery, the supernatural, humor, and fantastic visuals; the whole package." - All Comic

Buzzkill #2

"All of the writing in this book is absolutely stellar…If you’re not reading this book, go buy it now, because it is well worth your time and money." - Adventures in Poor Taste

"Buzzkill is unlike anything else you are reading. Its intelligent, action packed, and offers a realistic look at addiction. By the end of the issue youll find yourself fighting off the shakes in anticipation of your next fix." - Bloody Disgusting

Conan the Barbarian #21

"Conan the Barbarian #21 is a great comic book, that goes beyond the mandate of the traditional adventure yarn to deliver something that's absolutely worth your attention. Highly recommended." - Unleash the Fanboy

"I don't know why the Black Stones is so different from the rest of the story arcs Wood had done, but I am sure enjoying it. This issue is an upswing on the roller coaster ride that is Conan the Barbarian: Queen of the Black Coast." - Comics Bulletin

S.H.O.O.T. First #1

"S.H.O.O.T. First was an outstanding first issue that sets up the series and is a fun read to boot." - All Comic

"Full of conspiracy, controversy, and craftsmanship, “S.H.O.O.T. First” #1 is a powerful introduction to an original and unique new series." - Multiversity

The Strain: The Fall #4

"Readers will definitely have tremendous fun with “The Strain: The Fall” #4. This is how you make vampires scary again." - Bloody Disgusting

"Huddleston gives that energy and creativity that's subdued enough not to overpower the story, but also keep your interest." - Adventures in Poor Taste
