Manga Mondays: Dark Horse Manga Looks to 2014!

It's the New Year and it's time to plan and reflect, so, like that two-faced Janus (the clue's in the name, Sherlock) let's look both forward and back.

Back, of course, is 2013, which has been our 25th anniversary of manga publishing. We marked it in a number of ways, including releasing a book by the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund that offers a concise, informed, and important perspective on the medium and how it's been received in North America: CBLDF Presents Manga; check out the reviews of it here and here. We got to say hello to many of you again in person at Seattle's Sakura-Con, Anime Expo in Los Angeles, and Kumoricon in Portland. Once more, we want to thank everybody who joined us at our panels and who visited our booth.

Forward, assuming the world doesn't end before Wednesday (we were totally burned on those predictions of doom in 1999 and 2012) is 2014, and above are images from just a few of the Japanese titles we'll be talking about next year. The two on the left are both famous, even if they couldn't be more different (Miku and Daigoro are both cute, too, even if they couldn't have a more different hairstyle). Look for them this summer: the manga omnibus Hatsune Miku: Unofficial Hatsune Mix, written and drawn by Miku's original illustrator, Kei, and the 11-volume series New Lone Wolf and Cub, the direct sequel to the original epic, written by series creator Kazuo Koike and drawn by 1995 winner of the Shogakukan Manga Award, Hideki Mori.

Next over on the right is a manga that isn't as well known, but absolutely should be: Hiroki Endo's Eden: It's an Endless World, which will be returning in March after a long hiatus with vol. 14. We'll have much more to say about it as we get closer to its release, as we will about the artist behind that looming dude taking his dog for a walk. You might recognize him as Katsuya Terada's The Monkey King, and this summer we're putting out the most comprehensive collection ever of Terada's art in English, Dragon Girl and Monkey King: The Art of Katsuya Terada, complete with extensive liner notes on his work and an lengthy interview with the Eisner-nominated creator!

These are just a few of the Japanese books you can look forward to from Dark Horse in 2014, and we'll have new titles to announce, too. We wish everybody a happy New Year! The "everybody" should be said exactly like Billy Squier.
