Manga Monday: Vampire Hunter D Vol. 21: Record Of The Blood Battle

06/23/2014 9:39am

Vampire Hunter D is one of the longest-running, fan-favorite Japanese novel series (since the 1980s!), and in the latest installment, Vol. 21: Record of the Blood Battle,
the half-vampire, half-human “dhampir” known only as D has been tasked with guarding a convoy assembled to transport Baron Macula, a vampire noble, to face trial at last for his gruesome, unnaturally extended life of violence and plunder. Of course, that’s easier said than done…even for a being as accomplished and skilled as D!
First of all, there’s Macula himself, a petulant, corpulent, diminutive vampire long thought destroyed—but very much still in existence, possessing a nasty attitude, the ability to withstand the light of the sun, and more knowledge of D’s secret past than anyone else on the Frontier. And then there are Macula’s many enemies, all of whom don’t want to wait for any trial, but just want to pass sentence!
Beautiful illustrations by renowned artist Yoshitaka Amano accent the pages of this latest volume, including lovely new portraits of D in action, the grotesquely comic mien of Baron Macula, and a vicious monster known as the Salamander, who, with the appearance of a beautiful young woman, eagerly seeks out its next victim. Blood-soaked duels commence, strange new characters are introduced, and D faces his own ultimate destruction on the field of battle! Vampire Hunter D Vol. 21: Record of the Blood Battle is in stores this week!
