If, like me, you’re a fan of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, there’s a bit of a melancholy vibe reading the fourth and final issue of Son of Dathomir, which hit stores on Wednesday. After all, between the Season 5 finale, the Season 6 finale and now this comic, this is, essentially, the third time we’ve said goodbye to this incarnation of Star Wars – considering this comic book was based on a storyline first meant for the animated series.

As with those other “endings” though, it’s important to keep in mind that this story was never conceived as the conclusion for The Clone Wars. In this case though, given there was the opportunity to tweak things much more after the fact, it’s difficult to not wish there could have been a bit more of a feeling of finality, or at least the ending of a major chapter, than what we get here.

That being said, there is a lot to enjoy. The Jedi are completely left out of this issue, which focuses only on the villains of The Clone Wars – and what a collection of characters this is! Seeing Darth Sidious, Darth Maul, Count Dooku, General Grievous and Mother Talzin all in the same scene – and fighting each other – is thrilling and undeniably cool, giving us an especially impressive collection of power.
