Manga Monday: The Sky: The Art Of Final Fantasy Book One Out This Week!

10/20/2014 4:00pm
One of Dark Horse’s most popular releases in recent years has been Yoshitaka Amano’s The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy. We began with the limited-edition Boxed Set (unfortunately now sold out) and continued with the currently-available Slipcased Edition. There is one thing about both of these versions of The Sky, however—although they sold well, one cost $139.99, the other $89.99. Starting this week, Dark Horse is offering a third alternative, where you can get The Sky art books individually at a lower price, beginning with The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy Book One for $29.99!
These are the exact same, high-quality, hardback, oversized art books that were in the Boxed Set and Slipcased Edition; but if you didn’t want to spend that cash all at once, now you can by them one at a time. Back in the 1980s, Yoshitaka Amano was already one of the most sought-after fantasy illustrators in Japan, and had brought his design sensibilities to works like Vampire Hunter D. It wasn’t too surprising, then, that Amano was asked by Square (today Square Enix) to create the look of the first Final Fantasy game in 1987.
The Sky: Book One covers not only Final Fantasy I, but II and III as well, by which time the franchise had truly established its style and reputation. Introduced in Book One are characters such as Princess Sarah, Firion, Cid, Maria, Sara Altney, Alus Restor, Ricard Highwind, and many others, as well as the creatures that challenge them: beholders, hydrae, dragons, manticores, chimerae, and liches! Bonuses include illustrations done for the 1989 Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite CD Oath of Dawn, promotional art for the French release of the Final Fantasy anime, and drawings from the 1989 Final Fantasy novel Labyrinth of the Incubus. We’ll be releasing Books Two and Three of The Sky soon!
