Summertime’s Alright for Fightin’ by John Schork

We’re going back to the woods this summer, folks.  But instead being lousy with sparkly vampires and waxed-chested werewolves, the trees are lined with hardened, cold-blooded killers being rounded up as suitable prey for the universe’s most perfect hunters.  The only thing that’s fought Aliens, Tarzan, Batman, Superman, Magnus the Robot Fighter, The Terminator, Action Jackson, and Gary Busey is back and he’s brought all of his friends.

The legacy forged by the blood-bathed masterpiece is enduring this summer, and we here at Dark Horse are holding up our end of the bargain and bringing you the panel-by-panel accounts of the galaxy’s deadliest big game hunt.

In the four-issue prequel miniseries by Marc Andreyko and Guillermo Balbi, we chronicle the plight of Drake, a soldier who finds himself abducted and stranded on the biggest game preserve in the galaxy.  The series also explores the genesis of Laurence Fishburne’s character, Noland.  Each issue also has a back-up story by David Lapham and Gabriel Guzman introducing Royce, the hard-boiled mercenary played by Adrien Brody.  Besides providing a rousing introduction to the story presented in the film, the prequel also delivers the same insane action (most) of the series is known for.

Not only is Dark Horse bringing you to the beginning of the fight, but for those who can’t get enough carnage, we’re also putting out a chest-beating, giant-size adaptation of the film, written by Paul Tobin and penciled by Victor Drujiniu.  The adaptation tells the film’s grisly story through the eyes of Isabelle, the rifle-wielding heroine played by Alice Braga.  And if that wasn’t enough, David Lapham and Allan Jefferson are bringing us a sequel to the movie that can only be found in Preserving the Game, coming out July 14 from Dark Horse.

This summer, the Predators are doing everything they can to cover their planet in blood; and they’re not doing it over a corporate land grab or to extinguish the plight of an indigenous population.  They’re doing it the old-fashioned way: for fun.  And in keeping with tradition, Dark Horse is right there with them; bringing a new generation of impressionable fans back to an era when VHS was king and action heroes didn’t have time to bleed.  A time when Mel Gibson’s insanity only hurt Danny Glover, Arnold Schwarzenegger had never been pregnant, and Bruce Willis didn’t have a second album.  So, this summer, pump some iron, cover yourself in mud, go to your local comic shop, and start screaming for the Predator to come and kill you.

John Schork is the latest addition to Dark Horse's editorial team. He originally hails from Seattle until he was banished to Portland by the King of Washington for inciting rebellion.
