Manga Monday: Oh My Goddess! Omnibus Book Five

11/28/2016 4:35pm
The Oh My Goddess! omnibus series continues this week with the release of Book Five, collecting chapters 73 through 89. As with Books One through Four, the omnibus edition presents the legendary Oh My Goddess! at its best ever, with a larger page size than the regular graphic novels, bonus color, and higher-quality paper that brings out even more details in creator Kosuke Fujishima’s fine line work. Not to mention they’re a bargain! ^_^
You’ll note we say what chapters omnibus Book Five collects, instead of what volumes. That’s because whereas the first four omnibus books each collected three volumes of the regular graphic novels (so, for example, Book Four collected volumes 10-12), starting with Book Five, the omnibus edition collects runs of chapters instead of volumes.
The reason is that this was the point in the regular edition where the graphic novels started to vary widely in page count (this variation was in the original Japanese editions, which the Dark Horse versions were based upon). So if we continued to just put three of the regular editions in each omnibus, the omnibus books would start to vary widely in thickness, and as you can see, we’re trying to keep an even look for them. Therefore, at this point the omnibus books switch to runs of chapters instead of complete volumes.
By the way, we still of course pick up where we left off in Book Four :-) Book Four ended with Chapter 72, which was the last chapter of the original vol. 12. And Book Five begins with Chapter 73, which was the first chapter of the original vol. 13. The difference, again, is that Book Five doesn’t collect all of vols. 13-15, but ends part way through vol. 15. Book Six, of course, will pick up where Book Five leaves off, and will start with Chapter 90.
