Modern Fantasy #1 Review Roundup

Modern Fantasy #1Sage of the Riverlands dreams of adventure. She's about to become entangled in one, though it may not be quite what she expected...

Modern Fantasy, the new series by creators Kristen Gudsnuk (Henchgirl) and Rafer Roberts (A&A: The Adventures of Archer and Armstrong), juxtaposes classic fantasy roleplaying tropes with mundane office life and roommate trouble. Fans of humor and fantasy won't want to miss this series.

See what people are saying about Modern Fantasy so far:

"I am personally a sucker for any subversion of fantasy tropes, and seeing our heroine, Sage of the Riverlands, ride the subway between a giant insect and a bugbear, take selfies on her iScroll, and slog her way through the existential dread that is corporate fantasy land just works for me. On top of that, Gudsnuk's art is right in line with the writing, evoking shows like Steven Universe while maintaining a mature and measured use of detail to get the story across. From the deadbeat lizard and his deadbeat thief of a boyfriend to the monsters and creatures that populate Sage's monotonous daily routine, Gudsnuk has captured life in millennial America draped in trappings from the fantasy realm that she and Roberts clearly get." --AiPT!

"Dark Horse did well bringing Modern Fantasy to life; it's a pleasant change from the traditionally darker and heavier titles they usually focus on. Roberts and Gudsnuk's tale of a girl who gets what she wants and must decide what to do with it is one worth getting lost in--perhaps on the commute to that desk job you love to hate." --Doom Rocket

"With Modern Fantasy #1, I felt like I was already part of this world, and simply was reading about old friends. The book is new, but this world, being well-built, already feels familiar. It's humorous and fun, with the potential to have a nice long run that will keep us interested for the foreseeable future." --Comic Crusaders

"Kristen Gudsnuk is the mind behind the hilarious and surprisingly emotional Henchgirl, so seeing her name attached to a new monthly series from a large publisher is definitely exciting. Henchgirl took many tropes from traditional superhero comics and turned them neatly on their heads, and her sharp sense of humor kept things light until they needed to get heavy again. Working with writer Rafer Roberts feels like it could be a great fit, as his run on A&A: The Adventures of Archer and Armstrong proved to be just as resistant to stale tropes and enthusiastically embraced the kind of absurdity that suits Gudsnuk's style. They're teaming up for a book that feels particularly pertinent in an era where tabletop gaming, and especially Dungeons & Dragons-style RPGs are enjoying a podcast-fueled resurgence. Think Office Space meets The Adventure Zone: a young woman and her friends struggle through mundane day jobs and crippling student loan debt while wishing for high-fantasy adventures and swashbuckling." --Paste Magazine

"Modern Fantasy is a D&D campaign merged with The Office mixed with a dash of Saga. It's hilarious, snarky, and completely unexpected. Sage works in a cubicle in an office populated with elves, monsters, and wizards, but dreams of something more: a grand adventure involving battles, treasure, and magic. Unfortunately, she's got all this paperwork to get through and the most exciting thing that happens each day is listening to her coworkers talk about the latest episode of Keeping Up with the Kobolds. As you probably guessed, an adventure ends up finding her and the stuff hits the fan rather quickly. Rafer Roberts and Kristen Gudsnuk have produced one of the funniest and most charming debut issues we've read in ages." --Nerdist

"This is an absurdist snap shot of a specific time of everyone's life. The heightening with the fantasy elements works because everything felt so heightened at that age anyway. Like in my twenties, I find myself terribly and unapologetically in love with this comic book. Oh, to taste that sweet innocence once again." --Fanbase Press

"I'm very excited about this new comic and will definitely be reading it going forward. Modern Fantasy #1 is a perfect blend of genres and styles that is a fun read and a great nod to fantasy and geek culture. Add this one to your pull list, ASAP!" --Rogues Portal

"I feel like this one could be the start of a truly unique book for comic shops. Even if fantasy isn't quite your thing, Modern Fantasy's unique world offers something for most comic book readers. Whether you get a physical copy or download to your iScroll, this is one to get. This book was an absolute treat!" --Outright Geekery

"Modern Fantasy is what a fantasy series set in contemporary times should be, funny, its colors are vibrant and stand out, the characters are actually young people with depth and have their own personalities and if you were to remove the references of sex and expletives, it would be for all ages." --Review Fix
