Raule Discusses Writing a New Kind of Heroine in Isabellae

08/22/2019 11:30am
Isabellae isn't your typical samurai fantasy story. It's richly complex, featuring a strong, independent woman fighting against all odds in dangerous and inhospitable times. It's a refreshing new twist on a well-established literary trope. Writer Raule and artist Gabor took great care to create a story that not only entertained readers, but inspired and empowered them. We asked Raule about his experience writing this beautiful, unconventional story. Here's what he had to say.

"Isabellae came to us almost as a blessing.  It was presented to us at the right time, just when Gabor and I had no editorial contract on the table.  Gabor had just finished an album with Juan Díaz Canales (writer of 'Blacksad') and I had paused with my series 'Jazz Maynard' so that the artist Roger Ibáñez could draw a one-shot written by Zidrou.  Gabor contacted me to create a project and we immediately agreed: we would tell the adventures of a young samurai in 13th-century Japan.  We were presented with an important challenge because there are already many comics and mangas about intrepid samurai.  We were clear about her striking red hair from the beginning, so now it was time to work hard to give Isabellae a personality and a past that captivates even the most demanding readers.  Gabor and I fell in love with Isabellae and her friends as we finished each page.  We felt that they were no longer simply characters on a page, and that they were now part of our lives.  We are convinced that this love for the series shows in our work and that it is the main asset of the success of 'Isabellae'.  Thank you all for making such effort and dedication worthwhile.”
