For the Love of Comics by Jim Shooter

Comics veteran Jim Shooter, writer of Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom, Magnus, Robot Fighter, Turok, Son of Stone, and Mighty Samson, and been a legend in the industry for decades. Here's Jim now with a quick word about Dark Horse's 25th Anniversary!
Mike Richardson is, of course, Master and Commander of Dark Horse. When he’s in New York, or we’re at a convention somewhere, often we’ll have a cup of coffee and talk. Sometimes there’s business to discuss, now that I’m redeveloping the Dell/Gold Key characters for Dark Horse, but that never takes long. Mike is just, honorable, and generous. I’m smart enough to agree with a just, honorable, and generous man. We usually end up talking old war stories for a while. We’ve both been in and around this business for decades. From the outside, I guess it looks like the whole thing is a lark. How could making comics not be fun from soup to nuts?! A party! Sad to say, even in comics there are the occasional weasels, jerks, egomaniacs, and other party poopers. I marvel at his horror stories, and he marvels at mine.
But mostly, we talk about comic books. The ones we loved growing up, the ones we love now, the things that we can do . . . ! Ideas! Stories! Characters! It’s like we’re suddenly both kids again, about to steal a couple of tablecloths, tie them around our necks, and patrol the city!
A certain notable Daredevil contributor once told me he spent a night prowling the rooftops of Hell’s Kitchen to see what it would be like. When Mike and I get on a roll talking, that seems so reasonable...!
Anyway….
When I worked for Marvel Comics, the Big Bosses there had never so much as opened a comic book. The promotions VP who mostly handled costumed character appearances and the White House Easter Egg Roll, once asked me how many stories were in each comic book. A licensing VP once asked me if we owned Wonder Woman. No, that’s DC.
Speaking of DC, once, at an industry social function, one of their Big Shots asked me what “inking” was. That was long ago. Upper-management types at those houses probably care now. Especially now that the Giant Corporate Parent Companies have taken a direct hand. Dunno.
This I do know. Mike loves comics. Dark Horse loves comics. So do I.
