Patton Oswalt: An Interview about Serenity: Float Out (and toast)

05/27/2010 11:24am

Patton Oswalt is many things. Actor, comedian, toast-enthusiast. But more importantly, Patton Oswalt is a Serenity fan. I recently asked Patton a couple of questions about his new project with Dark Horse, Serenity: Float Out

DH: Why did you decide to write about Wash?

Patton: I had a really good story idea for him, and I pitched it to Joss, and he liked it, and then the birds started singing.

Q: This is the first published Serenity story set after the movie.  Are the things we learn in this one all officially sanctioned by Joss Whedon?

Patton: Everything except that the Serenity universe is being dreamed by an autistic child.

DH: Some might compare Serenity to Star Wars or Star Trek as one of the best sci-fi series of all time. Do you agree? Why has the series endured for so long with fans?

Patton: I completely disagree. The reason all 3 of those universes work is because they’re personal, and different from one another. Well, all 3 have Wookies, but besides that, they’re totally different.

DH: Have you met Alan Tudyk or any of the rest of the cast?  Did you confer with any of the cast or crew before writing “Float Out”?

Patton: I’ve met Alan when we did Dollhouse together. I told him about the story and he loved it.

DH: Final question, you've been on tv, in movies, and you tour the country pretty often as part of your comedy act. Despite all of your celebrity, are there still things that you'll totally geek out over? Comics? Video games?

Patton: I geek out over toast. I’ve never risen above it.

Look for Serenity: Float Out in stores on June 2nd, 2010!
