When the final episode of Nickelodeon’s hit animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender aired in 2008, fans were left uncertain of the future of its incredibly complex world of martial arts and magic. For fans clamoring for further tales of Aang and his companions, the wait is finally over, as Dark Horse and Nickelodeon announce the continuation of the story line with Avatar: The Last Airbender Volume 1—The Promise Part 1. With eighty pages of all-new content, The Promise arrives at select comic shops and bookstores on January 25, 2012.

Written by acclaimed author Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese), with direct guidance from series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, and stunning art by Japanese artists Gurihiru, this series of graphic novels rejoins Aang and friends for exciting new adventures, beginning with a face-off against the Fire Nation that threatens to throw the world into another war, testing all of Aang’s powers and ingenuity. In addition to continuing the story line established in the first three seasons of the show, this new graphic novel serves as an essential bridge to the animated series The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra, coming to Nickelodeon in 2013.

“Bryan [Konietzko, cocreator and executive producer of Avatar: The Last Airbender] and I are excited for our fans to read about the further adventures of Aang and the gang. Gene is an amazing storyteller and Gurihiru’s style is a perfect fit for the Avatar universe. It has been a great experience collaborating with Dark Horse once again,” said Michael DiMartino, cocreator and executive producer of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The epic story of Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the journey of Aang, a young boy torn between fulfilling his fate as the long-awaited Avatar and just wanting to be a regular kid. Aang is called upon to lead the fight against the vicious Fire Nation to restore balance in his war-torn world. Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara and her bull-headed warrior brother Sokka, Aang proceeds on a perilous journey to save the world while sometimes shaking off his heavy responsibilities so that he can enjoy being a kid.
