Star Wars Friday: Celebration Photo Blog

08/20/2010 11:38am
If you couldn't attend Star Wars Celebration V, then you missed out on a lot of fun. But, we've got a round-up of photos from the event to make you feel like you were there, looking out at the world through really grainy, blurry glasses . . . Turns out the nice camera was on the fritz, so all these images come from a first-generation iPhone. Deal with it!

These are just some of the many photos taken over the course of the four-day event. For more, check out our YFrog stream by clicking here.

On behalf of myself and the rest of the Dark Horse crew, we'd like to thank all the fans that came by the booth to talk to us about Star Wars, share their stories, and even list their complaints. We loved hearing from all of you, and we hope to meet you all again. It was a very positive show that left us all feeling proud to work in such a great industry with so many grateful and amazing fans. Again, thank you for making this trip a special event - can't wait for the next one!

Taken during set up, these statues were a huge hit among kids who were otherwise terrified of a stranger walking around in a Darth Vader costume.
These dudes were cool.
The show provided several props for fans to have a special photo moment. Didn't get a chance to take pictures of them all. Sorry!
This is a Sith Ewok, I think. Or something. Either way, it's rad!
John Jackson Miller signs our special, free Knight Errant #0 with our Kerra Holt model!
You can't see the embroidered detail on this costume because I'm a terrible photo-taker, but trust me, it was amazing!
A highlight of the event - R2-D2 races! Each droid had a series of obstacles, followed by a speed challenge to the finish-line. All in all, I'd say there were at least fifty participants.
Remember Predobear? Meet Predasith!
These were the second best t-shirts at the convention. This was the first.
On Saturday our hotel hosted the 'Sith Ball'. Things got . . . well . . . crazy. Met up with Adrianne Curry. Got crazier.
Star Wars: Legacy artist Jan Duursema signs for fans!
Jan with some of the guys from the previous night's 'Sith Ball'. They were so excited to meet her!
Warning: If you wear this awesome of a costume, you will never cease to be bothered for photos.
The highlight of the show for the Dark Horse crew was the original Ralph McQuarrie art exhibit. Inspiring, to say the least. The photo above is the first conceptual drawing Mr. McQuarrie ever did for the films.
George Lucas originally thought of Chewbacca has having the head of lemur. True story.
In McQuarrie's original concepts, C-3PO took on a more humanoid form, resembling Fritz Lang's Metropolis designs.
My personal favorite, it was, seriously, breath-taking to see this concept sketch of that iconic moment on Tatooine. I had no idea how much of a fan-boy I really was until I saw this original art.
McQuarrie's idea for how the raid on the Death Star should start in A New Hope. The attention to detail is mind-blowing!
A Darth Vader concept sketch, that, I believe, was from The Empire Strikes Back. I say this because Vader's helmet is tailored in the style we all know and love; the original sketches for his costume in A New Hope were much more Japanese-influenced. Plus, the background in the top panel suggests a brooding/contemplative scene that would have likely appeared in the second film. I can be, have been, and will be wrong. So if anyone has any insight, please leave your knowledge in the comment section below.
You probably know that Bonnie Burton got married to R2-D2. But I bet you didn't know that Star Wars editors Randy Stradley and Dave Marshall were hitched, too! Sorry the image is so blurry. I just . . . I just cry at weddings. *sigh* (Not pictured: Proud Papa, Jeremy Atkins.)
All good things must come to an end. See ya next time!
