Dark Horse in the Headlines - January 25th

If you haven't been keeping up with your comics media, here's some key links and reviews for you to check out what we've got going on in the news!

Nosferatu Wars

On Monday, Dark Horse announced Steve Niles and Menton3's new project, Nosferatu Wars - coming to Dark Horse Presents! When Steve's art got serious pickup in the Twitterverse, many readers wanted to know which comic house was going to publish this story - the answer: By one and only Dark Horse Comics. The announcement got great pickup and Geeks of Doom noted, "If you’re only reading one comic a month, it’s gotta be Dark Horse Presents."

Gene Yang and Avatar: The Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Promise Pt. 1 went on sale in the direct market on Wednesday.  Comic Book Resources  got an up close and personal interview with Gene Yang.  Here's just a taste of what Gene had to say. "Avatar: The Last Airbender- The Promise" gives me a chance to explore a recurrent theme from my other books: the clashing and coming together of cultures. The series itself is a mix of Eastern and Western cultural influences, so it all fits together really well. This project has been much more collaborative than any of my other graphic novels. Usually it's just me or just me and a close friend. Working with Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko has been an incredible learning experience. I've gotten to see how they work through a story up-close."

Art of Mass Effect & Barnes and Noble

Dark Horse Comics announced this week that anyone who pre-orders The Art of Mass Effect Universe through Barnes & Noble will also get “a code that can be redeemed for bonus content for Mass Effect 3 multi-player including character boosters and the deadly Collector Assault Rifle to give you a leg up on the Reaper invasion.” This was picked up by many gaming sites including Gaming Examiner, strengthening out partnership with BioWare and the video gamer community.

B.P.R.D. Summer Camp

Perhaps the largest piece of news this week broke over the weekend courtesy of MovieViral.com.  It's been confirmed and announced that Dark Horse Comics is doing a co-branded B.P.R.D. Training Camp with Trackers Earth  (with the approval of Mike Mignola, of course).  This news went viral by Monday morning, receiving pickup across the internet and incredible fan support.  We're very excited to see so many fans both wishing A) They lived in Portland, B) They were young again, and C) That there was an adult version of the camp.  If you chose C, keep your fingers crossed! You'll still have to move to Portland though.

ON SALE THIS WEEK IN REVIEWS

"Gage and Isaacs whip up a particularly delicious conclusion to "Angel & Faith" #6; it's a moment that in retrospect we should have seen coming, even as it reveals itself on the final page with a bit of surprise. It's a clever development, one that will excite a lot of readers." - Comic Book Resources

"Drusilla, in her most glorious form, is back in the game. But unlike before, when she was not in her right mind, she’s sane again. That means she’s tremendously dangerous. I cannot wait to see the blood running in the streets as a result of this. We are in for a wild ride now!" - Fandomania

"You know something, it is 2012, but I think I have to admit that my favorite title of 2011 had to be B.P.R.D., and that I think this year will be no different. Mignola and Arcudi have a web spinning here that is undeniably intriguing, action packed, and just all around cool." - ComicAttack

"Crook has fun with the nightmarish visions handed to him by the script. Mention should also be made of the amazing covers by Dave Johnson, resembling Soviet propaganda posters. Very eye-catching work, that should tempt readers to snap these issues off the shelves.  This is top stuff folks. Go get a taste of nightmares."- Comic Booked

Creepy #7

"Though it would be nice to have a book like Creepy come out every month, it may result in “too much of a good thing”. The nostalgia this book evokes is incredible, especially considering I wasn’t even alive during the era it evokes. Dark Horse has something wonderful on their hands, and every single one of you should be reading this book." - Bloody Disgusting

"Creepy is Dark Horse Comic’s alternative for those horror comic fans that want a break from the overpopulated zombie story market.  Surprisingly, the anthology features great, unique stories that pack the two-fisted punch of eerie plots concluded with a satisfyingly macabre twist." - Comic Bastards

"This book really has a little bit of everything; magic, action and history. If you are looking for an original take on Japan without having to hear the word “Kawaii” a million times over I say pick this up, I’m happy I did." - Comic Book Nerds Are Hot

"The Immortal's plot continues to evolve as well, with new twists being introduced that complement the shiny metal contraptions that appeared out of nowhere. I'm definitely going to keep reading this one because if nothing else I want to see the samurai-demon-steampunk battle that is surely brewing." - Bloody Disgusting

"I thank Crom for the return of Truman, Giorello and Villarubia. What a great team! What's to come? Brutal battles and the lushious ladies of course. I can't wait for issue #2." - iFanboy

"Saying the thing that probably needs not to be said, fans of Robert E. Howard and/or comics should pick u King Conan: Phonix on the Sword #1. It's not because the famous fictional barbarian's name graces the cover, but because it's also a well-crafted product." - Daily Blam

"Any reader who'd pick this book up should want to look forward to the rest of the story, and hopefully be encouraged to track down more of the past. First impressions go a long way, and the days of this being perceived as a tie-in to the Ninja Turtles are long gone." - Broken Frontier

"If you can see the beauty in the story and the complexities of it, then “Usagi Yojimbo” 143 is worth a read. Saturday morning cartoon like artwork also adds to the beauty of this comic. It does not need action to be entertaining. It is almost Zen-like." - Review Fix

Thanks for ending your week with "Dark Horse in the Headlines." We'll see you next week. Same time, same channel. \m/
