Resident Alien: An Interview with Steve Parkhouse

Steve Parkhouse is the artist on Peter Hogan's Resident Alien series. They've been working together for a while, but Steve wanted to work on something with an Alien in it. So they got together to write this amazing and character-driven comic series that started in DHP. You can pick up Resident Alien #1 today in the digital store or your local retailer.

Dark Horse Comics: What do you think Resident Alien brings to comics that you haven’t yet seen?

Steve Parkhouse: Probably a more sympathetic attitude to a nonhuman character. Most aliens depicted in popular culture are either psychotic predators or impossibly superior. Also, surprisingly, he has no designs on planet Earth or its minerals. So what does he want? Why is he here? Aha…that’s the hook.

DHC: The comic is a really wonderful mystery investigated by a man that just so happens to be an alien in disguise. What do you think that dynamic brings to the story?

SP: I think the ultimate discovery that Harry makes is that he is just like us. So in spite of the fact that he’s an alien, we can identify with him. The more he investigates the fears and foibles of the humans around him, the more he understands the universality of life. It’s not just a question of Harry “going native,” but of his discovery that wherever there is life, there is commonality.

DHC: There’s a lot of heart in Resident Alien, much of it coming from a nonhuman. Do you find that dichotomy interesting?

SP: I don’t find it a dichotomy at all. Who made the rule that aliens should be heartless? Why do we assume that qualities like compassion or altruism are confined to the human race?

DHC: How closely do you two work together to shape the story?

SP: Very closely. We have a psychic bond that transcends time and space.

DHC: Did any part of working on this comic’s story, art, or theme surprise you once you had finished it?

SP: Yes. All of it. Every frame, every page, every individual piece of drawing has been a revelation.

DHC: If you had a superpower, what would it be?

SP: I’ve already got it. Unlimited potential. And unsurprisingly, so has everybody else.
