Samurai Executioner is a manga series from Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, the creators of Lone Wolf and Cub. It’s set in the same world as Lone Wolf and Cub, but whereas Yamada “Decapitator” Asaemon is a minor character in LW&C, he is the protagonist of Samurai Executioner.

Samurai Executioner is currently being published by Dark Horse in omnibus format, just as Lone Wolf and Cub is. That means not only more story for less money, but also larger pages. With Kojima’s artwork at a bigger size, I feel I’m seeing these stories in a new way, and one thing I particularly notice is his command of portraiture.

It's safe to say that Dark Horse knows the way of the samurai. You might have heard that Mike Richardson and Stan Sakai's graphic novel depicting the true story (as opposed to the Hollywood film) of the 47 Ronin is one of the titles nominated this year for Best Limited Series at the Eisner Awards (actually, it was one of the three Dark Horse titles nominated in that category, together with The Black Beetle: No Way Out and Colder!).
