No Ordinary Love Statue - An Interview with Camilla d'Errico
We chatted with artist Camilla d'Errico about the new statue based on one her paintings. She filled us in on the process of taking beautiful piece and turning it into a fully realized and three dimensional statue. You can find this statue on shelves Now!
DHC: How did you and the product team decide on the art to use to create the No Ordinary Love statue?
Camilla d’Errico: Believe it or not, it was really my sister AdaPia who championed this image. This particular painting has a special meaning to me, and my sister knew that it would mean a lot to me if it was made into my first statue. So I was really happy when the Dark Horse team chose this one. I couldn’t have been happier!
DHC: How did you feel about the process as a whole, and have you worked in this way before with other products?
CD: This was definitely the most intimate of all the products that I’ve done. I have to give a huge thank-you to David Scroggy, who was in charge of the project. He is incredible to work with, just fantastic! I was consulted very closely. Each time there was an update, I was contacted, and I gave a lot of input to get the statue to look as accurately as it could to the painting. I think they did a fantastic job. And honestly, it was unlike any other product for me. I’ve never had so much of my input put into the design before.
DHC: Did you have to approach this process a little bit differently than you do for your other works?
CD:As my first statue, and first 3-D render of one of my paintings, it was all a series of firsts for me. I spent a great deal of time going over the details to get the right look. With a series of still images of the 3-D model I was able to visualize so much more of the girl than I had even conceived. Now I had to think about what the back of her dress looked like, what her hair shaped into…it was really neat to imagine her in 3-D space. I’ve never had that before with my paintings.
DHC: What’s been the reaction so far from your fans about the new statue, and what excites you most about its release?
CD: My fans are thrilled! They love her. She’s as close to the painting as she could get, and it’s very extraordinary for the statue to have the same painterly detail as the painting. Her dress is stunning, and the crows are so detailed. It’s really surprising. Pictures don’t do her justice—in person you can see so much more of the small details that make her so comparable to the painting. I’ve always wanted a statue or a figure of my work, so this is honestly one of the most exciting products I’ve had the pleasure to release.
DHC: If you had a superpower, what would it be?
CD: Telekinesis. Hands down. I could do everything those guys did in Chronicle…but hopefully I wouldn’t go power mad and destroy the city…
DHC: Thank You, Camilla!
