THE WEEK IN REVIEW

AUGUST 21, 2013

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #110

"It's a rock solid issue with unclear motivations, but it is still a high quality issue of B.P.R.D." - Multiversity

"Overall, Lake of Fire is off to a great start. The story is engaging from start to finish, I think this could be the best B.P.R.D. arc in awhile." - Unleash the Fanboy

Blood Brothers #2

"The panels gets the job done, and with the help of colorist Dan Jackson, one gets the aesthetic of Vegas ingested with the ease of take out by one inebriated or toasted. Although I will admit that occasionally the covers remind me of a Capcom game. 9.0Funny as Hell.Fun art.Not scary vampires." - Adventures in Poor Taste

"Blood Brothers” #2 has such snappy dialogue and an animated vibe that flows very easily between its two main protagonists. There's plenty of funny moments in the “Blood Brothers” series that makes this comic worth reading." - Bloody Disgusting

Conan the Barbarian #19

"The art is just gorgeous. All of the shadows and coloring give the book just the right feeling. The blood splatters all over the page in a bright red that draws you in. The scene in the church especially is just gorgeous and makes the fight scenes just that much better." - Adventures in Poor Taste

Creepy #13

"Every story except the reprint (another lukewarm Archie Goodwin story) is strong, and Peter Bagge once again gives a lighthearted touch to another really solid issue." - Newsarama

"All told, this issue of “Creepy” delivers its usual cocktails of scares and screams, shivers and chills, and while it's not without its weaker moments, there's more than enough horror going on here to keep you going till the next one. Besides, has anyone ever really regretted an afternoon with Uncle Creepy?" - Multiversity

Dark Horse Presents #27

"Give a random issue of "Dark Horse Presents" a try and I'll bet you'll find more than enough fun to make you happy, too. And of course, the longer you stick around, the more stories you'll get to read from their starting points, too. Having bought this revived series since its return, I don't regret a thing. Come on board and see for yourself what you've been missing." - Comic Book Resources

"Comic books have always been an escape; taking us on adventures we could not have, and giving a voice to the things we dare not say. “Dark Horse Presents” #27 reminds us why we love the genre. Full of creative passion and unique perspective, this volume is well worth exploring." - Multiversity

"If you’ve only got eight bucks to spend on comics, this is where you put it. The industry’s premier anthology series, Dark Horse Presents always promises to show you something new. It is THE best place to discover new creators. Issue #27 brings us the conclusions to three different stories." - Unleash the Fanboy

Lobster Johnson: A Scent of Lotus #2

"This is the Lobster Johnson comic I always wanted, combining beautiful, expressive art with a pulpy, driving story filled with monkeys and wu assassins. This is just a fantastic comic." - Multiversity

"Chock-full of the usual noir influence, this installment (as well as its predecessor) has stood out thanks to denser dialogue and more thoughtfully fleshed out characters, not to mention the return of the Noh monkeys." - Newsarama

Star Wars: Dark Times—A Spark Remains #2

"Wheatley does the usual outstanding job on pencils. The comic book is light on action and that plays right into Wheatley's hands. There are some soft moments in this book and plenty of drama in one or two of the subplots and Wheatley answers the challenge. This is a very good visual book. I can't imagine what the last three issues have in store for this arc but I can't wait to find out. This is a fantastic read." - ComicsList

Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin #5

"It's the best Star Wars comic I've ever read and I'm not exaggerating that point. Hopefully Sidell and crew will be back for more Vader "the early years" because they've reignited a passion for this character that I thought was dead." - Comic Bastards

"Overall a great series with some pacing issues here and there. This issue delivers all the answers you'd want and comes complete with a very well rendered moment between Darth and the Emperor. The art has always been of a bombastic nature with great lighting and pace too." - Adventures in Poor Taste

The Strain: The Fall #2

"Chilling at its core, “The Strain: The Fall” #2 keeps the story moving with such a fast drive. If you're a fan of the novel, you will be immensely pleased with how the artwork brings to life the book's prose." - Bloody Disgusting

"The pace is fast, the action always around every corner and the art impeccable for this type of book. It's dark, it's interesting and it keeps even the dullest of scenes lively." - Adventures in Poor Taste

AUGUST 28, 2013

Angel & Faith #25 (Steve Morris cover)

"And although we are nearing the end of the Season 9 stories, we know that Season 10 is just around the corner. We don't know what form it will take just yet, but it is coming. And I am looking forward to when season 10 shows up on my shelves." - Comic Booked

"Angel & Faith" #25 was a great conclusion to a series that will be genuinely missed. All of the other "Buffyverse" comics over the years have had ups and downs, but credit to Gage and Isaacs: this has been a remarkably consistent and good comic. I wish all licensed books took this much care." - Comic Book Resources

Captain Midnight #2

"One of the best parts of this series is the super scientist himself, Captain Midnight. His power is his brain. Hes an inventor who can throw a solid punch. Hes a futurist from WW2 who has just come into the future he was predicting." - Bloody Disgusting

"It's a fun read full of action, invented vehicles, and hot women (don't judge…hot women sell in the comic market!). When I'm free on a Friday night and my buddy says “Hey man, c'mon out with us” I say “I'm on my way” The same goes for this issue. Give it a shot! Read this issue! I think you'll like it!" - Florida Geek Scene

Itty Bitty Hellboy #1

"It's really interesting -- and really cool -- that this book may be responsible for a new generation of HELLBOY fans. We get the reverse effect of licensed properties that try to make our nostalgic favorites still feel cool and fresh; coming in to an existing universe with a family-friendly spin means that young fans of ITTY BITTY HELLBOY have a fantastic selection of books to grow into." - Comic Vine

"I'm dismayed that this will only last five issues. Although it makes sense (and it's very much like Hellboy to have this be a miniseries), I wish we were getting a lot more of these books. Maybe someday! Until then, I'd pick this up as soon as I possibly could. It's snappy, funny, and it jumps off of the page, screen, or what have you." - Comic Bastards

King Conan: Hour of the Dragon #4

"Truman's prose flows freely around the art, enhancing the visuals and capturing the pulp age feel perfectly. His characters speak like they are Howard's but with a modern bent as this mini keeps going strong" - Newsarama

"King Conan: The Hour of the Dragon #4 is nothing less than a superb outing, that sends this saga toward what should be an engaging penultimate issue. Highly recommended." - Unleash the Fanboy

Mass Effect: Foundation #2

"With solid artwork, a fun story and some familiar faces, this is a great read for fans of the franchise, and those of science fiction in general." - Digital Noob / EGM

"It's definitely a worthy purchase for the story alone. Let's put it this way, if you like the games you definitely should add this to your pull list." - Florida Geek Scene

Mind Mgmt #14

"So, with another issue of Mind MGMT, comes another 5-Star rating. Matt's story just continues to captivate, motivate and inspire. In some ways, it is more real than real." - Unleash the Fanboy

"Overall Mind MGMT is one of the crown jewels in Dark Horses cap and a maxi-series unlike any other. This should be on everyones list to read and I fully expect it to top numerous best of lists when the year ends." - Graphic Policy

Star Wars: Legacy #6

"While this issue has some shortcomings, it stands out sufficiently enough as a representative of a new series that shows promise as a deserving entry to the Star Wars expanded universe, and the happenings of this issue are enough to make readers want to stick with it." - Comic Book Resources

"Star Wars: Legacy Volume 2 #6 continues to prove that this continuation is not only a smartly crafted affair but it's also one of the better incarnations of this aged franchise. Highly recommended." - Unleash the Fanboy

Station to Station (one-shot)

"Overall, you would do yourself well to take fifteen minutes to escape from your mundane existence and lose yourself in the pure, unadulterated fantasy Bechko and Hardman deliver with Station to Station. This one takes my pick of the week for its pure fun." - Comic Booked

"Station to Station benefits from having breakneck pacing. The story fires on all cylinders. Hardmans choice of paneling allows the story to capture all of the right moments, without focusing on the less interesting ones. As a result youll be reading this one shot hoping for more from the team." - Bloody Disgusting

The Massive #15

"In a world dominated with the often mundane and generic super hero title, this series continues to uphold my faith that there are genuinely original comics out there that deal with topics rarely seen in comics today and The Massive does it in spades every single month. Hats off to Brian Wood, Garry Brown and Dark Horse Comics. This issue gets a 9, but the three part story arc gets a solid 10." - Comics the Gathering

"The Massive is a title every comic fan should be reading. Its suspense doesn't rely on superheroes but rather the harsh realities of what could be an apocalyptic world if we don't save it. Hop on the Kapital with Cal and his crew, you're in for one hell of a ride." - Geeks Unleashed
