Dark Horse Halloween Spooky Staff Picks!

10/19/2017 10:52am
Looking for some expert recommendations for hair-raising horror reads this Halloween? Well, look no further! The Dark Horse Comics staff is here to give you a helping (severed) hand!

Here we have Dustin, the Dark Horse PR Coordinator, with his pick for Halloween horror!

“In my opinion, there’s nothing better than a great Hellboy one-shot. And when that Hellboy one-shot includes witchcraft and the horror vibe that makes Big Red’s adventures so memorable, you have a wicked combination that’s as grim as it is fun. This free one-shot for Halloween Comic Fest is perfect for a spooky Halloween read AND intro to Hellboy’s horrifying adventures."

Look for the Dark Horse Comics Halloween ComicFest offering at a comic shop near you on October 28th! Find a participating retailer here!

Next up we've got Kari, the Dark Horse International Licensing Manager! Her pick for Halloween is Neil Gaiman’s Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire. It's a dark, brooding, and oddly comical graphic novel that's sure to get you in the Halloween spirit!

"Forbidden Brides is Neil Gaiman’s love letter to gothic literature in which a writer hilariously puts quill to paper over and over again in a futile attempt to compose a “very serious” story about the human condition, but finds himself incapable of falling into parody. It’s Edgar Allan Poe meets Monty Python with art that conjures Dark Shadows by way of Francisco Francavilla."

Here's Kevin, Assistant Editor here at Dark Horse Comics. Kevin is also an amazing illustrator! His spooky staff pick is a total classic! It's Aliens: The Original Comics Series Volume 2!

Aliens is still one of the scariest books I’ve read. I think it’s due to H.R. Giger’s creature designs that freak the sh*# out of me. You don’t want to know what it sounds like while I’m editing these books. If I was reading them in outer space, I’m pretty sure that you could hear me scream!”

For the horror fan who loves a bit of everything, you can’t go wrong with The Dark Horse Book of Horror, our new omnibus chock full of short comics for every macabre taste - hauntings, monsters, witches, and more - and rounded out with beautifully illustrated prose tales as well as interviews with a séance medium and a Wiccan High Priestess. And with contributors such as Gary Gianni, Mike Mignola, Jill Thompson, and Evan Dorkin, what’s not to love? Curl up with this one and dig in.

Check out this spooktacular horror pick from Associate Editor, Katii! She's a bit of a horror expert, having spent the past few years working on titles from Mike Mignola, Richard Corben, and more!

This is Cara, the Dark Horse Social Media Coordinator! Her pick for Halloween horror is definitely a favorite among the Dark Horse staff. It has also made it on to our Spooky Staff Picks two years in a row! That's how good it is!

"From the very first pages of the first issue, Harrow County pulls you into its eerie landscape, winds its twisted roots around and through you and refuses to let go. Tyler Crook’s gorgeous artwork brings Cullen Bunn’s Southern Gothic-style horror tale to fantastic, charming-yet-creepy life. I’ve found myself haunted by this story in real life, seeing haints in normal, everyday scenes. If you enjoy dark, atmospheric horror, you should absolutely pick up Harrow County."

Next up is Assistant Editor, Megan. Her pick for Halloween reading is one of the most terrifying manga titles you can find! Check it out!

“It’s like The Walking Dead . . . but better! I Am a Hero is the perfect psychological, zombie horror manga that you never knew you needed. Kengo Hanazawa is a total master of the genre, and his art and writing are hauntingly beautiful and will stick with you long after you finish reading.” —Megan

For our final spooky staff pick, we've got Allyson! She's a digital art technician for Dark Horse. Her Halloween horror favorite comes from the legendary creator, Richard Corben! Behold, Shadows on the Grave!

"A great collection of gory, beautifully rendered, and often funny tales by the legendary Richard Corben. Filled with short stories sure to please fans of horror and the supernatural. It’s black and white and macabre all over. Read alone by flashlight under bedsheets for maximum squirm effect!"

Thanks for joining us for another year of Dark Horse Halloween Spooky Staff Picks! From all of us at Dark Horse Comics, we want to wish you a safe and happy Halloween!
