Manga Monday: Blade of the Immortal on the Silver Screen

100 films.

Can you imagine making 100 films (and counting) in a career? That's an incredible number, an incredible feat, and something that, with the release of Blade of the Immortal, legendary filmmaker Takashi Miike has accomplished.

The samurai adventure that has been entertaining fans via the pages of manga since 1993 is now making its big-screen debut (and showing locally in Portland at the Hollywood Theatre!). Blade follows the story of a cursed samurai, Manji, who, in order to reclaim his mortality, must eradicate one thousand evil men. But it's not just Manji's story, it's also Rin's, a young companion of Manji's who is attempting to avenge her parents' death, a task which Manji vows to assist her with.

Manji and Rin's epic adventures lasted thirty Japanese volumes, which was then collected into 31 English-language volumes by Dark Horse. When the Blade volumes came to an end in 2015 with the release of Volume 31, Final Curtain, fans were clamoring for more and luckily, didn't have to wait too long. Not only with the film debuting this month, but beginning around this time last year, the manga team here at Dark Horse began collecting the beloved Blade series into omnibus volumes.

Blade of the Immortal is a story that is not just adored by fans, but also us here at Dark Horse; we're beyond honored to still be working on this incredible series by Hiroaki Samura twenty-four years after its debut and we hope the love for this fantastic story lives on forever!

Make sure you check out Blade of the Immortal, in select theatres now, and be sure to pick up the next volume in our Blade omnibus series: Blade of the Immortal Omnibus Volume 4 on sale this Wednesday, November 8 at your local comics shop and in bookstores everywhere November 14.
