Eisner Award-Winner Montana Kane on Translating Isabellae

Translating is an essential part of bringing some of your favorite books and comics to life. Some of Dark Horse's most popular books have been painstakingly translated from their original international publications. Titles like The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, Blacksad, Moebius Library: The Art of Edena, and Berserk have all required skillful translators to bring the material to new audiences.

Such was the case with Isabellae, a new action-packed tale of a strong warrior woman in feudal Japan. And who better to translate this empowering graphic novel than Montana Kane? Fresh off an Eisner win for her work on Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World, Montana explained what made translating Isabellae such a special experience.

"I’ve translated 230 comics and graphic novels over the past few years, and when Dark Horse asked me to say something about ISABELLAE, I looked back on those titles and was happily surprised to observe that there are a fair number of them that feature female characters in the lead roles. That said, nobody comes remotely close to kicking as much butt as our formidable redheaded samurai! Part of what I like about being a translator of comic books is that you get to work in a wide variety of genres: I’ve done everything from sci-fi to sword and sandal to slice of life to westerns to medieval fantasy to literary memoirs to war dramas and more. One of the exciting things about ISABELLAE is the way it mixes genres and brings two very different worlds together: the world of Japanese samurais and the world of Celtic druids, with a few zombies, ghosts, winged sky creatures, ancient gods and spiritual musings thrown into the mix as well. Isabellae is a fearless and deadly warrior with a tragic past butchering her way towards inner peace and forgiveness, but she is also compassionate and generous and she has the kind of sharp and witty tongue that makes a translator's task more enjoyable. Happy reading!" -Montana Kane, Translator
